Germination and Life Span of Pulsatilla cernua var . koreana Seeds

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the optimum temperature and light condition for germination of Pulsatilla cernua var. koreana, and the main factor of early loss of seed vigor was also detern fined. The optimum temperature for seed germination was 25¡É regardless of light and dark condition. But at 20¡É and 30¡É germination percentages were lower under light condition than dark condition. During seed storage, seed germination was gradually reduced, and after 8 weeks, the percentage was 45.5 %. Thus, P. cernua var. koreana seeds have a short life span and available longevity was maintained about 6 weeks during seed storage. Most of seeds were germinated within 14 days after sowing. During seed storage, total sugar content in seeds was markdly decreased while electrical conductance was increased. And the germination percentage was positively correlated with sugar content and was negatively correlated with electrical conductance. As the results, it is suggested that the rapid loss of sugar might be the very important factor of early loss of seed vigor.
